time

“Too busy,” is a myth. We always make time for the things that are truly important to us. I hear far too many people give the excuse that they, “don’t have time” to add anything else onto their plate. From my point of view, that is a choice. We always will make time for the things we want to do. If it’s a priority, it will happen.

For example, when “life” happens, and you get a call from your child’s school that they are sick and need to be picked up, you make time for that despite your packed day. Because it is a priority, you make it work.

One of the best ways that I have found to make time for everything that needs to be taken care of, not just what I want to do, is starting my daily list the moment I get out of bed. I grab my steno pad and start jotting down tasks, from the least exciting and more challenging, all the way to the more enjoyable errands. In that order, folks. Then I start my day. I work on those tough ones first and work my way down, not skipping over or ignoring any item. That’s the important part.

The beauty of “the list” is that it is ever-changing, just like my day. If something urgent comes up at the office or at home, it gets bumped to the top of the list. If I am finding that the day is winding down, and I still have items left on my list, I set myself up for success tomorrow and begin the next day’s list while everything is still top of mind.

Don’t let yourself fall into that “too busy” trap. You are in charge of what you complete that day. The most productive way of tackling the day is not by picking and choosing your responsibilities, but instead implementing a systematic way of getting through everything!
